I believe these are actual Japanese or Chinese rice harvesting sickles as they are used every day. They were used for fighting in medieval times when comon people were forbidden to have swords. These are razor sharp, the steel is probably not the best, but I'm sure they can be sharpened if they need it. At this price,it is a good value.
